About our
property:
FRIGILIANA:
This charming country cottage in the
Axarquia is perched on a hill of olive
trees overlooking the white Moorish
village of Frigiliana and the
Mediterranean Sea, and backed by the
Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Sierras. It
is conveniently located 5 minutes by car
(a pleasant 20 minute walk) outside
Frigiliana, right off the road to Torrox,
and is only a 10 to 15 minute drive to
Nerja and the beaches of the Costa del
Sol. A large municipal pool is available
in the village. Málaga is less than an
hour's drive away, and Granada only 90
minutes. The beautiful and historical
cities of Cordoba, Seville and Ronda are
easily reachable. The cottage is set in a
garden of fruit trees and flowers amidst
the olive grove. The terrace faces
east-southeast down the valley to the
sea--a beautiful place to sit and watch
the moon (or sun!) rise. The fully
equipped kitchen and bathroom are tiled
with hand-made tiles, and a large
wood-burning stove in the salon is
perfect for chilly winter days and
nights.
Frigiliana is set on a mountainside 6
kilometers from Nerja's beaches on the
Costa del Sol. Nerja has many shops, bars
and restaurants, and just on the
outskirts are some famous prehistoric
caves. In Frigiliana one can visit an
interesting archeological museum that
houses pieces from the Phoenician era
found in caves and burial mounds around
the village and along the Higuerón
River. There are shops selling locally
grown fruits and vegetables, an olive
mill where one can buy oil pressed from
local olives, as well as ceramics and
souvenir shops and several bars and
restaurants. The village has botanical
gardens, children's playgrounds and a
modern gymnasium and pool. Hikers can
enjoy many stunning walks into the
sierras and up the river, including one
long hike up to the Pass of the Ravens,
which overlooks the great vega south of
Granada.
The Cortijo Laurel combines a peaceful
and romantic ambiance with easy access to
wonderful walks in the sierras backing
the property and the village of
Frigiliana, as well as to the river
Higuerón, the coast, Nerja, Almuñecar
and other white villages in the Axarquia.
The views of the sea, the mountains, the
terraced fields of olives and avocados
that fall towards the coast, and the
clouds over Africa are breathtaking.
Birds are abundant throughout the year,
and wild mountain goats can sometimes be
seen on the slopes above. Also, perched
on the mountainside as it is, the starry
night skies are a wonder to behold.
